Purchase Guide - Digital Photo Frames

Digital Photo Frames, also called Digital Picture Frames, Digital Photo Viewers or Digital Picture Viewers are electronic devices widely used in households and businesses to display photos and pictures taken by a digital camera or generated from a computer. More and more people buy digital photo frames to replace traditional wooden and glass photo frames to display photos in their homes and offices.

A Digital Photo Frame should include three major components, e.g. a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display screen, a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and outer frame.

Digital Photo Frames for consumers are usually from 1.1 to 15 inches. People buy 1.1 to 1.5 inch digital photo keyrings and pendants for carrying around, buy 2.4 to 3.5 inch viewers as bedside and office desktop displays, ideal with built-in alarm clock if for bedside cabinets, and buy those with screen sizes between 5 and 15 inches for displays and cabinets in sitting rooms. CSTN LCD screens are usually used for small sized viewers while TFT LCD screens for large sized frames.

Models with screen size below 7 inch are usually with built-in Flash Memory and batteries. Models from 7 inches to 15 inches are usually need a power supply from mains and a power adaptor should be provided by manufacturers.

Smaller sized photo frames or viewers are usually with USB socket for users to transfer pictures into the memory while larger sized photo frames have usually got one or two card reader(s) and a USB socket enabling display of pictures taken with a digital camera directly from a memory card and/or an USB disc with pictures stored.

Many models of digital photo frames larger than 5 inch can also play music and video as a digital media player and some models can even receive Freeview TV and Digital Radio channels. Some models provide built-in memory for storing pictures, music and video and a few models have built-in rechargeable battery offering freedom to display pictures without a need to connect to mains for a while.

Almost all digital photo frames or viewers can show pictures in standstill mode and run slideshow with maximum time intervals from seconds to up to 3 hours. Some models can play background music simultaneously while running slideshow.

Display Resolutions of digital photo frames vary from size to size, resolution for a photo viewer with 1.5 inch screen is usually 128 x 128 pixels, 2.4 inch screen 320 x 240 pixels and 7 inch 480 x 234 pixels. Resolutions for a larger sized photo frame is not necessarily the same as one with smaller size in terms of pixels per square inch for a quality display as pictures are usually viewed with a longer distance.
